Where to look on a Fossil card

Gengar, labelled1234
Gengar, labelled.
  1. 1 1st Edition stamp. Only the first print run has it. No stamp means Unlimited (the later, larger print).
  2. 2 Set symbol: a small fossil skull.
  3. 3 Card number and rarity: the number out of 62, then the rarity symbol (circle common, diamond uncommon, star rare).
  4. 4 Copyright line: the years and company names show when the card was printed.

The cards collectors look for

Under each card: how many were printed (never published) and how many each grading company has graded, by version. The number in brackets is how many got a perfect 10. Graded counts are not the number that exist: most copies were never graded.

The packs and the box

Fossil booster packs came in 3 different designs. The design is just the artwork on the wrapper: every design holds cards from the same set. Booster boxes held 36 packs. Use these to recognise genuine packaging, then check the seals with our sealed packs and boxes guide.

Go deeper: holo and non-holo twins

Like Jungle, Fossil prints each holo rare twice: 15 holos numbered 1 to 15, and the same Pokemon as non-holo rares numbered 16 to 30. Lapras is 10/62 as a holo and 25/62 without the shine.

Go deeper: the set symbol

A small fossil skull, bottom right of the picture. If you see that symbol, the card is from Fossil.

Go deeper: Mysterious Fossil

One of Fossil's 5 Trainers is Mysterious Fossil, which you play like a Pokemon. It is the card that lets you evolve into Omanyte, Kabuto and Aerodactyl, and it explains the set's name.

Go deeper: Zapdos and Raichu twice

Zapdos and Raichu appear as holos in both Base Set and Fossil, with different artwork. Check the set symbol: no symbol means Base Set, the fossil skull means Fossil.

All 62 cards, in order. Under each: number, version and how many have been graded (PSA + CGC + TAG, all versions). Card images via TCGdex and pokemontcg.io.

Go deeper: the printable checklist (62 cards)

Tick them off as you collect. "Holo rare" means the picture shines. Names as printed on English cards.
